OnePlus 15R will be the first smartphone with Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip
It’s now official: the OnePlus 15R will be the first smartphone to feature Qualcomm’s new 8 series processor — Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. Along with this, the company has also revealed fresh details about the upcoming lineup of mobile devices.
Yes, it’s the OnePlus 15R that will get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 — and it’s important to emphasize that this is not the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 version installed in the OnePlus 15.
The regular version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 was presented on November 26 — just before OnePlus’ announcement. In terms of specs, the chip is noticeably different from the Elite variant.
The main difference — CPU frequencies. The two Oryon performance cores run up to 3.8GHz (Elite’s — up to 4.6GHz), and the six performance cores — up to 3.32GHz versus Elite’s 3.62GHz. The chip supports LP-DDR5X RAM, but at speeds up to 4800 MHz, while the Elite runs at 5300 MHz. The Adreno GPU appears to be the same in both versions. In addition, the Elite’s Snapdragon X85 5G modem has been replaced by the Snapdragon X80.
Although some may see this as a major simplification over the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 found in the OnePlus 15, Realme GT 8 Pro and Poco F8 Ultra, the reduced power will potentially help with better heat control. That’s an important point, given that all of the Elite-chip-powered devices tested were noticeably warm.
In addition to the new processor, OnePlus said the OnePlus 15R will get a DetailMax photo processing engine, G2 Wi-Fi module, and a 1.5K resolution AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate. Judging by the description, the screen will likely be the same one used in the OnePlus Nord 5, not the OnePlus 15.
OnePlus has yet to disclose the battery in the OnePlus 15R, so it remains unknown whether the model will get the large 8,300mAh battery expected in the Chinese version of the OnePlus Ace 6T.
