Sony announced the Xperia 5 V with a larger main camera sensor

Sony has unveiled a compact flagship — Xperia 5 V. The phone received an updated camera system, which lost the telephoto lens but gained a large primary sensor. It’s built around the same 6.1-inch OLED display with FHD+ 120Hz FHD+ resolution and 21:9 aspect ratio, with front-facing stereo speakers on the sides.

Sony has packed the Xperia 5 V with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, along with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, expandable via a microSD card slot. The 3.5mm headphone jack has also saved room for another year — a real rarity these days.

Turning to the rear panel, we see the first noticeable difference. Sony has ditched the triple camera in favor of a dual camera, but still got a much more powerful sensor than before. The Xperia 5 V has the same 1/1.35-inch 52MP main sensor as the Xperia 1 V. By default, it produces 24mm 12MP images. Thanks to the larger sensor size and light-enhancing optics, if you opt for the 2x zoom option (actually 48mm), you’ll still get quality lighting.

The second camera — a 12MP 1/2.5-inch ultra-wide-angle camera with a 16mm focal length — appears to be the same camera found in the Xperia 1 V and last year’s Xperia 5 IV. It features dual-pixel autofocus.

With a 6.1-inch screen diagonal and high viewing angles, the Xperia 5 V retains its compact size. The phone has added 11g in weight and become slightly thicker, but it’s still slightly shorter than its predecessor. Starting with the Xperia 1 V, the Xperia 5 V feels pleasantly miniaturized. In the shrinking market for compact flagships, it will compete with the Galaxy S23 and the upcoming iPhone 15 and 15 Pro.
The Xperia 5 V is the only phone in the market with a compact size.
The battery — the same 5,000mAh capacity as before, but we expect the Xperia 5 V to last longer on a single charge thanks to the updated Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. Sony claims that with a 30W charger (purchased separately), you’ll be able to discharge the smartphone to 50% in 30 minutes. The Sony Xperia 5 V will go on sale at the end of September, priced at €999.
