Foldable iPhone could get an under-screen camera

Foldable iPhone could get an under-screen camera

Apple has been discussing the possibility of a foldable iPhone for a while now, and now it’s been revealed that the device could debut as early as 2026. Not only would it be the most expensive model in the company’s smartphone lineup, but it would also be the first to feature Apple’s under-screen camera technology.

Sub-screen camera and display specs

The information was shared by a reliable insider at Digital Chat Station. According to him, the foldable iPhone will get a 7.76-inch internal display with a resolution of 2,712 × 1,920 pixels. The camera will be located under the screen, a solution that Apple patented back in 2021, and in 2023 the first reports of the technology being tested appeared.

Although still inferior to conventional front-facing cameras, the under-screen cameras can achieve a seamless screen without cutouts – like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series devices. That said, according to the leak, the foldable iPhone will also feature a regular front-facing camera on the outer screen, so users won’t have to deal with the technology’s shortcomings.

Exterior display and design

Besides the main screen, the device will have a 5.49-inch external display with a resolution of 2088 × 1422 pixels. Unlike the internal one, it will use the classic hole-punch solution, like on most modern smartphones.

According to the insider, Apple may opt for a more compact form factor, similar to the Oppo Find N2, instead of an elongated design like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. This approach would make the device more comfortable to use with one hand and less bulky when folded.

Price and release date

The foldable iPhone is expected to cost around $2300, making it Apple’s most expensive smartphone at launch. That’s pretty much expected for a device that combines innovative technology with an experimental form factor.

There’s no official statement from Apple yet, but if the leaks are true, the device could debut as early as 2026.
