Google is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Photos service and announcing a major update to its image editor coming to Android and iOS. The company also unveiled new features and shared stats on the app’s usage.

New AI editor and features

The updated Google Photos editor will be simpler and easier to use, with all editing tools in one place and an interface styled in Material 3 Expressive, the new Android 16 design with a focus on color and animation. The editor will also get support for new AI tools, including Auto Frame, which expands the background of photos, and Reimagine, which generates a selected section of an image based on a text description.

Google says Photos will get “even smarter” by allowing you to create and share memories with new AI features. The updated editor is expected to be available to Android users as early as next month, and on iOS later this year.

The Google Photos service continues to gain popularity. According to the company, more than 1.5 billion people use the app or web version every month, and the service stores more than 9 trillion photos and videos. Every month, users perform 370 million searches, share 440 million memories and edit 210 million photos.

Google says the new features will make working with photos even easier and help users create beautiful photos without the need for sophisticated tools.
