Reviews for the long-awaited sequel to the franchise appeared Thursday, ahead of the game’s release this Friday, and the verdicts were overwhelmingly positive, with most publications giving the game excellent ratings.
OpenCritic confirmed shortly after the embargo was lifted that the game is currently the highest-rated game of all time on the platform with a combined score of 97.223. According to the site, the game is also ahead of Super Mario Odyssey (96.81) and its predecessor Breath of the Wild (95.9).
Metacritic also began collecting reviews shortly after the embargo was lifted, and at the time of publication, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the highest-rated game of the year with 97 points. It’s also the highest-rated Nintendo Switch game on Metacritic, and the site’s highest-rated new game since Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018 (also 97 points).
Critics praised the game in reviews, with most agreeing that it’s a worthy sequel to the franchise.
