Sonic Superstars – a new two-dimensional Sonic with 4-player co-op

Sega has announced a new 2D Sonic game. Sonic Superstars will allow players to control Sonic, Tails, Knuckles or Amy Rose, and for the first time, a Sonic game will feature cooperative support for up to four players. The game will be released in the fall of 2023 in both digital and physical form on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch and PC.
The game will be available in both digital and physical form.
The Sonic Superstars trailer was also shown, showing off the game’s new 2.5D visual style. The designer of the original Sonic character Naoto Oshima returned to help with the game’s design and created «the new character that Sonic and his friends will have to face».
According to a Sega press release: «The journey of Sonic and his friends begins in the beautiful North Star Islands, a mystical place that offers never-before-seen environments as well as a mysterious story waiting to be told.
Great creatures, exciting adventures and Dr. Eggman’s evil plans await Sonic and his friends, who can now gain new abilities, known as Emerald Powers, when they collect Chaos Emeralds.

With new abilities — clone creation, waterfall climbing and energy charging. Sniper Fang, the old enemy from Sonic Triple Trouble on Game Gear, will also return to help Eggman.
Sega says the «classic 2D platformer Sonic has been reimagined for current-gen platforms with new zones, music, gameplay and modern UHD visuals only possible with 3D graphics».
