Sony has confirmed that LittleBigPlanet 3’s servers on PlayStation 4 will remain offline «indefinitely» following problems with the service earlier this year.

The company gave fans the bad news in an update on its website, explaining that the temporary server outage in January will now be in effect for a much longer period of time. The decision means that millions of user-created levels will no longer be available to new players. Sony cites «ongoing technical issues» as the reason for the discontinuation of support.

Content saved on players’ local devices is still available, with users able to create and play content while disconnected from servers. PlayStation is also directing LittleBigPlanet fans to offline features if they want to continue playing the game in some form.

While players eventually rush into new experiences, games have been known to lose touch with some online features for several years after their release. The lack of server access in LittleBigPlanet games — is a particularly big blow, as they are known for their endless ocean of player-created content such as levels and outfits. LittleBigPlanet 3 even allowed players to use custom levels from the previous two installments.

Players on the PlayStation 3 lost access to this content when Sony shut down the PS3 servers for LittleBigPlanet 1, 2, and 3 in 2021, and now the same fate has befallen the PS4 version of the third game. Closing the servers indefinitely means that there is no official way to see the content that players have been creating since the original LittleBigPlanet was released in 2008. LittleBigPlanet 3 was released for PS3 and PS4 in 2014.

It’s unclear exactly how much user-generated content has been added to the game since its release, but in February 2017, more than seven years ago, Sony boasted that the game had more than 10 million levels. How many of those have been lost today is unknown.
