A PlayStation director has stated that development of the PS5 Pro began before the PS5 was even launched

PlayStation co-chairman Hideaki Nishino revealed that work on the PS5 Pro began before the original PS5 launched on November 19, 2020. He said Sony took into account the experience of creating the PS4 Pro and its success among users, which spurred the development of a Pro version for the next generation.
Sony has been working on a Pro version for the next generation.
Nishino noted that when the PS4 Pro was sold, about 20% of users opted for this premium version over the standard PS4, and among them were not only gamers keen on new technology, but also brand new users attracted by the Pro console’s features. It showed that there is a demand for such devices.

Nishino emphasized that the accelerated development of technology today makes updates meaningful. While smartphones and PCs are updated every year, consoles can also attract innovation in a short time frame, though not at such a frequent pace. The PS5 Pro, a five-year project, was launched with the goal of introducing the latest technologies that could significantly improve the gaming experience of users within a few years of the PS5’s launch.

«This is our vision: packaging the most advanced technologies for the gaming segment, not every year, but with tangible benefits for users,»” Nishino summarized.
