Elden Ring Nightreign launched with high online but mixed reviews

Elden Ring Nightreign successfully debuted on Steam despite mixed reviews from players. According to SteamDB, concurrent users peaked at 313,593 just an hour after the release, which took place at 3:00 p.m. PT on Thursday.

Although online has been gradually declining since then, it’s expected to grow again over the weekend and possibly surpass the original peak. The current figure makes Nightreign the second most popular FromSoftware game by peak users on Steam – second only to the original Elden Ring, which reached 953,426 players at the same time.

FromSoftware’s second most popular game by peak users on Steam, Nightreign is the second most popular game on Steam – second only to the original Elden Ring, which reached 953,426 players at the same time.

The studio’s other titles, including Dark Souls III (129,975), Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (125,315) and Armored Core 6 (156,171), didn’t make it to those numbers.

One factor contributing to the high online is thought to be the emphasis on co-op. Although Nightreign can be played alone, the game is geared towards three-player co-op, which automatically increases the number of players in sessions.

That said, user reviews remain mixed. At the time of publication, the number of reviews on Steam exceeds 10,000, of which more than 3,400 are negative. The final score is about 66% positive reviews.

The main complaints include the lack of two-player play: Nightreign offers only single-player mode or three-player co-op. Many users feel that without two partners and voice chat, the game’s experience is significantly compromised.

Nightreign’s main complaint is the lack of a two-player mode or a three-player team.

Players also complain about the limited variety of content typical of roguelikes and performance issues even on powerful PCs. FromSoftware has already acknowledged these difficulties.

In a patch notes published on release day, the developers wrote: “We have confirmed that some configurations with the latest graphics cards may experience FPS drops. We are investigating the cause. For now, we recommend setting graphics settings to medium or low and lowering the screen resolution, as well as updating your graphics card drivers.”
