The opening quote of Alan Wake was bought for $1 from Stephen King

Steven King has sold the rights to use one of his quotes in the opening game Alan Wake for $1, Remedy reports. Speaking to Eurogamer, Remedy’s Sam Lake said he «desperately wanted» to open the game with a quote from King, whose works influenced the first game.

The quote in question goes like this: «Nightmares exist beyond logic, and there is little fun in explaining them; they contradict the poetry of fear».

In a horror story, the victim keeps asking why — but there can be no explanation, nor should there be. The unanswered mystery — is what stays with us the longest, and it is what we will remember in the end.

This quote is taken from a 2008 Entertainment Weekly article titled «Why Hollywood Can’t Make Horror» in which King laments the failure of the major studios to develop horror films for mass audiences.
