HMD is preparing a smart watch with Wear OS and a built-in camera

HMD Global, known as the Nokia-branded smartphone company, is preparing to enter the smartwatch market with an unexpected twist. According to leaks, the manufacturer plans to launch two Wear OS-based models at once – the HMD Rubber 1 and Rubber 1S. And one of them may get a camera, which will be the first such solution among watches with this operating system.
According to insider @smashx_60 (HMD_MEME) at X, the HMD Rubber 1 model features a 1.85-inch OLED display, a 400mAh battery, and support for charging via USB-C and Qi wireless. It also has 5 ATM water protection, Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi and NFC. The watch tracks heart rate, blood oxygen levels and steps. The main feature is a built-in 2MP camera, which is extremely rare in the smartwatch segment. As Notebookcheck suggests, the camera could be placed above the screen, like the JrTrack 4 children’s watch.

The second model, the HMD Rubber 1S, gets a smaller 1.05-inch OLED display and a 290 mAh battery. It also tracks health and has 5 ATM water resistance, but doesn’t support NFC, being limited to Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi.
The two models run on Wear OS and appear to be aimed at kids. HMD’s partnership with Xplora Technologies, a maker of children’s smart watches, which began in October 2024, is indirect evidence. The devices are likely to use a simplified children’s interface similar to the Galaxy Watch for Kids with support for Family Link and educational apps.

Official details on launch date and pricing are not yet available. However, given the active development of Wear OS in the kids segment by Google and Samsung, the timing of the release is good for HMD. If the Rubber 1 and 1S are indeed aimed at kids, they could carve out a niche for themselves with their unique camera feature.
