Apple could put a USB-C port on older iPhone models

There are more and more leaks confirming rumors that Apple will ditch the iPhone 15’s signature Lightning port and replace it with a USB-C port. Of course, that would be a monumental change considering how long we’ve all been waiting for it, but there are rumors that Apple is planning to do something even more surprising.

Another rumor is that Apple is planning to do something even more surprising.

When a new generation of iPhone is released, Apple typically continues to sell non-Pro models of the previous generation. It’s unlikely to expect any changes with these older models, but Apple developer Aaron has discovered something special that could indicate otherwise in the near future.

Apple’s developer Aaron has discovered something special that could indicate otherwise in the near future.

While digging into the code of tvOS 17 beta 5, Aaron discovered two new references to iPhone models that are different from the four found in previous betas. Presumably, the original four models refer to the four iPhone 15 models that we expect Apple to announce on September 12. This begs the question: what are the other two models?”

What are the other two models?

The theory is that these models will be the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, but with new USB-C ports. If this turns out to be true, the most likely explanation —EU compliance. Although, if that’s the case, shouldn’t the port on the iPhone 13 be changed as well? There’s also the possibility that we’re talking about the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 (sans Plus).

The more logical option might be that these additional iPhone mentions — are simply devices for developers to run internal tests on. The truth is that we can’t know for sure, but they raise some questions and create some mystique around the iPhone 15 launch. The good news is that Apple’s iPhone 15 event is only a month away, so we won’t have to wait long to find out.
