An anime based on Death Stranding is in development

Creator of the legendary Metal Gear Solid series and author of Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima, has officially confirmed that an anime adaptation of Death Stranding is currently in the works. He revealed this in an interview with Japanese publication Vogue, where he also shared his thoughts on the future crossover between movies and video games.
Hideo Kojima is now officially confirmed to be working on an anime adaptation of Death Stranding.
Movie with ambition, anime in development
During the interview, Kojima also touched on the upcoming full-length movie adaptation of Death Stranding, which is being produced by A24 Studios. He said that his goal is to create a movie that will not just be an adaptation of the game, but a full-fledged movie that can win awards at prestigious festivals like Cannes or Venice.
“I’m currently working with A24 on a feature film based on Death Stranding,” Kojima said (via machine translation). “There are many approaches to bringing games into visual media. For example, The Last of Us follows the original storyline, while The Super Mario Bros. Movie is more fan-service oriented. I, on the other hand, as a movie buff, want to use the expressive possibilities of the movie specifically. I want to create Death Stranding, which can only be realized in a movie format. And, by the way, we’re also working on an anime adaptation.”
Previously mentioned, now confirmed
This is the first time the anime has been officially confirmed as being in development. In an interview with Variety last year, Kojima only mentioned anime as a possible direction for expanding the Death Stranding universe. At the time, he indicated that development of the IP would take place in several stages, starting with a sequel to the game and then moving on to other media platforms – movies, TV series, and now anime.
Phase Two: Expanding the Death Stranding Universe
“To strengthen our intellectual property, we’re making a sequel, and it will be a game,” Kojima told September 2024. “And the next thing is to expand to other platforms: movies, anime, TV series, etc. That’s phase two. That’s what we’re aiming for right now.”
What’s next?
No details on the format, studio, or release date of the anime are available yet. However, given A24’s involvement in the film project, we can expect a high-quality and unusual visualization of the Death Stranding world in the animated format as well. Given Kojima’s ambition and willingness to experiment, the anime version may well surprise even fans familiar with the original game.
