OpenAI has released a “conversational” GPT-5.1
OpenAI has announced the release of a mini update to its model, GPT-5.1, which is now available to a wide range of users. According to official statements, this update is designed to make the ChatGPT chatbot “smarter” and “more communicative” by adding new communication styles and an improved ability to follow instructions.
Users will be able to choose between two versions of GPT-5.1, starting with the paid ChatGPT subscription, which will receive the updated version today. The company is confident that GPT-5.1 Instant will be the most popular, as it will be “warmer, smarter, and better able to handle commands.” On its blog, OpenAI noted that feedback during testing showed that users were surprised by its “playability.”

In addition, the company will introduce a new reasoning model, GPT-5.1 Thinking, which will be able to provide clearer and faster answers for simple tasks, and persist and provide more detailed explanations for more complex ones. It is promised that this model will use fewer tokens for common questions, and for complex prompts, provide answers with less jargon and undefined terms. It’s also noted that Thinking mode will become warmer and more empathic.
The two models will get enhanced options for customizing the tone of communication. As part of the update, OpenAI announced new dialog styles, Professional, Frank, and Quirky, which will complement existing modes such as Default, Friendly, Efficient, Cynical, and Nerdy. These styles will be able to be applied to other modes as well, and there are plans to introduce even more detailed ChatGPT personality settings in the future, allowing users to further adjust the bot’s behavior beyond the preset modes through personalization settings.
