Comet – the first browser of the future with AI on board: what Perplexity’s new development offers

Perplexity has unveiled a bold new innovation in the world of browsers – Comet, which radically redefines interaction with the Internet. It’s powered by artificial intelligence that is changing the way we search, read, and process information online.

Artificial intelligence is changing the way we search, read, and process information online.

The browser is built on the Chromium engine (the foundation of Google Chrome and other modern browsers) and is deeply integrated with the AI language model. Comet replaces the traditional search bar with a search engine from Perplexity, providing fast and accurate answers, and includes a sidebar with a helper ready to help at a moment’s notice.

Anytime you’re on the web, you’ll be able to use the search engine to find the answers you’re looking for.

The Comet interface looks familiar. The main difference is the assistant in the sidebar. Otherwise, you’ll find the standard elements: navigation, tabs, and bookmarks.

Since the browser is based on Chromium, it supports all Chrome extensions and retains the familiar tab layout. Importing bookmarks, passwords, settings, and extensions is a one-click process, making it easy to switch to Comet without unnecessary customizations.

A built-in AI assistant takes center stage, making everyday surfing feel like a conversation. You can ask a question in simple language, and it’ll help:

  • Explain the content of the page
  • Cite links to sources
  • Work with live content – for example, transcripts of YouTube videos or Google Docs documents
  • Provide alternative viewpoints or expand on a topic of discussion

Comet works with any languageIf you open a page in Spanish, the assistant can immediately translate and paraphrase it in English. This makes the browser truly international.

Comet adapts to youThe browser “remembers” how you search for and read information. It organizes sessions, takes into account previous queries, and tailors suggestions to your interests.

Mail and Calendar IntegrationComet can connect to your apps and help with productivity: recap emails and events, compose messages, manage appointments, and plan your schedule.

Smart Shopping and BookingThe browser can compare products and services across sites, helping you make a better decision without unnecessary browsing.

Context is always at your fingertipsComet remembers what you asked about, even when you’re navigating between pages. You can ask follow-up questions without repeating the original information.

Built-in ad blockerComet comes with an open source built-in ad blocker. Unlike Google Chrome, which makes it difficult to use ad-blocking extensions, Comet protects users from intrusive ads by default.

Privacy ControlPerplexity emphasizes that user privacy is key. You can customize which features run locally and which are handled in the cloud. For maximum privacy, there’s a strict mode where all tasks are performed directly on your device.

Availability and CostAt launch, Comet is available for Windows and macOS. Support for other platforms is planned for later. Basic AI features are free, but full access to the browser requires a Perplexity Max subscription, which costs $200 per month. Subscribers get access with no waiting period – others can sign up for a waiting list.
