Baidu launches two new versions of its Ernie artificial intelligence model

Chinese search engine Baidu has unveiled two new artificial intelligence models: the Ernie 4.5, an updated version of its base model, and a novelty in the field of reasoning-based models, the Ernie X1.

The new Ernie X1.

“The ERNIE X1 delivers performance comparable to the DeepSeek R1, but at only half its price,” Baidu says of its new model.

TheX1 features “enhanced capabilities in insight, planning, reflection and adaptation,” making it the first model with such deep analytical capabilities to allow tools to be used autonomously.

With regard to the latest version of the ERNIE 4.5 base model, Baidu claims it has “outstanding multimodal understanding.” This model demonstrates more advanced language skills, and its abilities in comprehension, text generation, logical reasoning and memory have been significantly improved.

At the same time, the model’s language skills are more advanced.

Despite being one of the first Chinese companies to offer an alternative to OpenAI ChatGPT, Baidu is still struggling to find widespread use for its developments. DeepSeek, meanwhile, has recently raised concerns among U.S. AI companies and investors by releasing models that appear to be just as powerful as their counterparts, but cost much less.
