Apple wants to do away with ports

Rumors about the iPhone 17 Air, which is set to hit the market this fall, are already buzzing in the minds of Apple fans. The gadget promises to be the thinnest iPhone the company has ever released. However, if Apple had realized its earlier ideas, thinness might not be the only discussion. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in the newsletter Power On that the original idea was to make the iPhone 17 Air Apple’s first portless device, abandoning USB-C.

That said, Apple decided to shelve the idea to avoid more friction with European regulators. Gurman also noted that the company is still considering a portless device for future thinner models, depending on the success of the iPhone 17 Air. Apple plans to launch four new iPhones this year, in keeping with its usual strategy, with the iPhone 17 Air being about 2 millimeters thinner than the other models. This past weekend, insider Sonny Dixon shared a series of photos of purported iPhone 17 mockups, showing just how thin the Air might look compared to its “brethren.”

According to Gurman, the iPhone 17 Air will cost around $900, making it an intermediate model between the base iPhone 17 and the two more expensive variants. It’s expected to offer the usual battery life, a screen measuring about 6.6 inches, Dynamic Island, and a camera control button. While nothing has been officially confirmed yet, the wave of rumors and leaks about the iPhone 17 is sure to continue to grow over the next few months.
