Nintendo has finally revealed the first official details about the new Switch 2 console. It’s scheduled for release on June 5, which means users still have time to figure out which accessories from the first version will remain relevant. And while there will be a lot of physical changes to Switch 2, not everything will have to be re-bought — many familiar devices and peripherals will be compatible, but with some important caveats.

Joy-Con: Old controllers work, but they won’t mount

Switch 2 will ship with a new generation of Joy-Con controllers – they’re larger and now attach to the console with magnets rather than physically snapping on like before. This means that the old Joy-Con cannot be attached to the console body, but they will still work via Bluetooth. So if you already have a pair of controllers from the first Switch, you’ll be able to use them to play locally with your friends.

Pro Controller: compatible despite upgrade

The original Pro Controller is also supported by Switch 2. Nintendo will introduce an updated version of the gamepad with larger buttons, GameCube-inspired ergonomics, and customizable rear paddles, but the old controller will work without issue. It connects via Bluetooth and can be charged via USB cable from the new dock. The updated model will cost $80, so if you’re happy with your current gamepad, there’s no need to change it.

Classic gamepads: support will remain

Nintendo has confirmed that wireless controllers from the NES, SNES, N64 and Sega Genesis will be compatible with the new console. But not all games will be able to use them – the list of compatible titles has not been revealed yet. Most likely, we’re talking about the same games that were supported on the original Switch.

Switch controllers: no guarantees yet

Perhaps the biggest question is whether third-party gamepads will work. There’s no confirmation from Nintendo or the brands themselves yet. However, if the Switch 2 supports the original Pro Controller, we can assume that officially licensed models will also receive support. One manufacturer has confirmed that it’s in talks with Nintendo, but it’s not ready to share details just yet.

MicroSD memory cards: Express only

The good news is the Switch 2’s built-in memory has increased eightfold, from 32GB to 256GB. The bad news is that not all microSD cards will be compatible. Nintendo has stated that Switch 2 only supports the microSD Express format, which limits the choices. Older cards will allow media files to be viewed, but games and saves can’t be written to them.

It’s easy to identify the right type – the card should be labeled «EX». Without it, the microSD will be incomplete with the new console.

Wireless headphones: now without the tambourine

In contrast to the first Switch, where Bluetooth has long been unavailable, the Switch 2 initially supports wireless headphones. That means you can use your favorite Bluetooth headsets right out of the box – no adapters or third-party solutions.

Docking stations: incompatible across generations

The docking station for Switch 2 has gotten a notable update – it’s larger, with rounded edges and support for 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. However, Nintendo has clarified that the original dock is not suitable for the new console, and vice versa – the first-generation Switch won’t work in the Switch 2 dock.

For those with multiple TVs in the house, this could be a problem – you’ll have to buy additional docks just for the new model.

Second docks: not yet known

A number of third-party docks worked well with the first Switch, and theoretically they could work for Switch 2 as well – if they provide enough power. But there’s no official information yet, so it’s too early to be 100% certain.

Chargers and cables: it’s not that simple

The original Switch was very finicky about unofficial chargers, especially in TV-connected mode. Judging by the early indications, the Switch 2 will continue that tradition. While the old charger can be used to directly charge the console itself, it won’t work in dock mode.

What about third-party chargers – there’s no compatibility data yet, as Nintendo hasn’t disclosed the power consumption parameters of the new system. So far, the only charger guaranteed to work is the one that comes with the Switch 2.

HDMI and cables: new version required

Switch 2 likely supports the HDMI 2.1 standard, so a cable from the original console will be unsuitable. Nintendo hasn’t explicitly stated whether third-party HDMI cables will be supported, but the Switch 2 comes with a cable – and that’s a plus.

Adapters: GameCube only

The only officially compatible adapter at the moment is the GameCube controller adapter. It plugs into the Switch 2 dock and allows you to play in TV mode. No word on other adapters yet.

Summarize

Nintendo has provided plenty of technical details about the Switch 2, including release date, improvements, and key features. However, as you can see, many questions about accessory compatibility remain unanswered. This is especially true for third-party branded products like controllers, chargers, HDMI cables, and docking stations.
