Apple recently received a patent for AirPods with a screen case.
This innovation will allow users to control audio sources and playback, adjust modes, answer calls, and interact with apps associated with the connected device. All of this is made possible by the compact screen on the case.
According to the patent, the enhanced case will be able to respond to certain gestures, such as taps and swipes, to navigate on-screen content and activate the Siri personal assistant. In one workflow scenario, Apple describes how squeezing the case changes the AirPods’ listening mode. Presumably, it’s about switching noise cancellation and transparency.
