Huawei unveiled the Mate 80 Pro Max – the world’s first smartphone with a dual-layer OLED display

Huawei has officially announced the Mate 80 series in China, and at the top of the lineup sits the new Mate 80 Pro Max — the most powerful, rugged and technologically advanced Mate to date. The device gets a metal body, a dual-layer OLED screen, enhanced connectivity and serious camera improvements.

The Mate 80 Pro Max has an all-metal body and is protected by second-generation Kunlun glass. Huawei claims this design provides 20x better drop resistance, 20% better bend resistance and twice the scratch resistance of the previous generation. The smartphone is IP69 and IP68 dust and water resistant.

The most innovative part was the dual-layer OLED display — an industry first. With this structure, the panel achieves brightness up to 8,000 nits, increased energy efficiency and improved contrast. The screen size — 6.9 inches, 120Hz refresh rate, 10-bit color reproduction, 1440Hz PWM dimming, and 300Hz touch response.

The display is designed to provide a brightness of up to 8.9 inches, a 120Hz refresh rate, 10-bit color reproduction, 1440Hz PWM dimming, and 300Hz touch response.

The entire Mate 80 series features a full 3D ToF system on the front. It combines depth sensors and a 13-megapixel camera to more accurately recognize the face, as well as track the user’s posture and movement.

Performance is provided by the Kirin 9030 Pro chip paired with the Ark graphics engine. Huawei claims the Mate 80 Pro Max is 45% smoother and 34% faster to load apps compared to the Mate 70 series. The device supports 3DGS-accelerated rendering and hardware raytracing with up to 20 million rays per second.

The smartphone has received a record level of wireless technology integration. It supports Wi-Fi 7 Plus, standard mobile networks, Tiantong satellite communications and Beidou satellite messaging. Huawei is positioning the device as a solution for all situations: «terrestrial network + satellite network + no network», including support for 700 MHz emergency communications.

The new generation camera —Maple Leaf Imaging System — gets a redesigned primary sensor with an equivalent pixel size of 2.45 microns and a 96 percent increase in light sensitivity. Dynamic range has been increased by 300 percent, and an updated spectral array should improve color fidelity.
