Huawei announced flagship FreeBuds Pro 5 headphones with NearLink Audio support

Huawei has announced the next generation of its flagship wireless headphones — FreeBuds Pro 5. Although the device has yet to go on sale, the specs already published indicate a major upgrade over the previous model. The presentation took place shortly after the release of the Mate 70 Air smartphone.

Pre-orders are already open in China, with the full launch coming later this month. Huawei hasn’t revealed all the details yet, but it’s already clear that the company is betting on sound innovation — especially amid the anticipation of the AirPods Pro 3.

The main innovation of the FreeBuds Pro 5 — NearLink Audio technology. It’s the first wireless headphones to use this standard, and Huawei calls it the start of «a new era of lossless audio transmission». The technology delivers audio at up to 2.3 Mbps in standard mode and up to 12 Mbps at peak rates. The headphones support the L2HC codec, which significantly improves sound quality over most Bluetooth models. In addition, NearLink is energy efficient — power consumption is reduced by about 40 percent compared to traditional solutions.

Thanks to this, battery life should see a noticeable increase over the FreeBuds Pro 4, which offer up to 33 hours of playback time with the case. Huawei hasn’t disclosed the exact figures yet, but promises a noticeable improvement.

The design of the headphones has also changed slightly, with the noise-canceling microphones now positioned differently, which should improve ANC performance.

With support for lossless audio, more cost-effective hardware, and an updated design, the FreeBuds Pro 5 looks like a serious contender among premium wireless headphones. Full specs and impressions will be revealed when they go on sale later this month.
