The number of Sora downloads in the first week almost equaled the number of ChatGPT downloads at launch

After taking the top spot in the US App Store, OpenAI’s Sora app has had a very successful start, far surpassing ChatGPT’s first seven days. According to analytics platform AppFigures, Sora was downloaded about 627,000 times during that period, while ChatGPT was downloaded about 606,000 times.

It should be kept in mind that the comparison isn’t entirely fair, as ChatGPT was only available in the U.S. at launch, while Sora launched simultaneously in the U.S. and Canada. In Canada, about 45,000 installations were made in the same period, which is about 96% of the first weeks of ChatGPT’s launch in the US alone. That makes Sora’s success even more impressive considering that the app is currently available by invitation and not to a general audience.

Sora was downloaded approximately 56,000 times in its first day of release. Already on its first day, it ranked third among all apps in the U.S. App Store. By Friday, October 3, it had reached number one, beating out popular AI apps like Anthropic’s Claude, Microsoft’s Copilot, and even xAI’s competitor Grok.
Sora is now the No. 1 app in the U.S. App Store.
According to AppFigures, download figures have remained steady since the launch on September 30. Daily downloads peaked at 107,800 on Oct. 1, and have fluctuated from 84,400 (Oct. 6) to 98,500 (Oct. 4) thereafter. Although the app is still in the early stages of testing, the numbers indicate strong interest in the app
