CATL has announced the certification of the first sodium-ion battery for electric vehicles. The new battery is capable of charging up to 80% in just 15 minutes. Mass deployment of the technology in passenger cars is scheduled for 2026, while integration in trucks has already begun.

So far, the company has announced that it will be available in electric vehicles.

Characteristics of the sodium-ion battery

According to the manufacturer, the new type of battery has the same size and capacity as its lithium-ion counterparts, but costs about 10 times less.

The battery has a lifespan of up to 25 years, far exceeding the performance of traditional solutions. The battery remains functional at temperatures as low as -30 °C, can be charged at -40 °C, and is characterized by increased operational safety.

Implementation Prospects

Certification paves the way for large-scale use of sodium-ion technology in the auto industry. Such batteries could change the market in the coming years, lowering the cost of electric vehicles and increasing their reliability in harsh climates.
