The Dutch phone company has made an interesting choice of chipset — it has settled on the Qualcomm QCM6490. This is a chipset designed for embedded and industrial applications. It should be similar in performance to the Snapdragon 778G.

And it’s the same as the Snapdragon 778G.

Qualcomm is offering long-term software support — eight years or until 2031. Fairphone is doing its best to ensure long-term support, for example, the latest update to the Fairphone 2 came seven years after launch. However, the choice of industry chip could be a deciding factor.

Either way, the Fairphone 5 has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, as well as a microSD slot. The microSD slot, like the SIM slot, is now a separate module. The modules have become eleven in total (up from eight), with the cameras and vibration motor also becoming separate parts. This allows you to swap them out individually.

The company ditched the LCD display of previous models and opted for a slightly larger 6.46-inch AMOLED display (compared to the Fairphone 4’s 6.3 inches). It has a higher resolution, 1,224 x 2,770px, and runs at 90Hz (compared to 1,080 x 2,340px, 60Hz). Even with the switch to AMOLED, the fingerprint reader has remained on the side.

Fairphone 5 has three 50MP cameras — two on the back and one on the front. All three cameras can record video in 4K. They are equipped with «premium lenses» but focal lengths and other specs are not disclosed.

The battery is also bigger — it has a capacity of 4200 mAh (up from 3905 mAh). No word on charging specs in the leak (the Model 4 had 20-watt wired charging). The new model also features improved connectivity, with Wi-Fi 6E (6GHz) and Bluetooth 5.2.

The new model also has improved connectivity options.

In addition, the device is rated IP55 versus IP54 (5 means resistant to water jets, 4 — to splashes). As seen in the leaked images, the new phone will be available in Sky Blue, Gray, and Transparent colors.

All this sounds great, but now it’s time for the bad news — according to the leak, the Fairphone 5 will cost €700. By comparison, the old model cost €580. The official announcement of the phone is just around the corner, so stay tuned tomorrow. It will be interesting to see what Fairphone has to say about the software support for the new module.
