Apple Arcade: Inmost

.

As you explore a mysterious and dangerous world, you alternate, Lost Vikings-style, between playing as three characters: a defenseless child, an almost defenseless human (who can at least run and jump), and an almost indestructible knight. And these characters add a nice amount of variety to their respective parts of gameplay without compromising the cohesion that’s held together by the mesmerizing aesthetic.

It turns out to be a terrifying puzzle-platformer with great sound design and an evocative low-fi look.

Apple Arcade: Alba: A Wildlife Adventure

A battery-draining but otherwise delightful catalog game in which you walk the streets, beaches, and mountains of a Spanish island and photograph the local fauna.

A wildlife adventure.

You also pick up trash, fix bridges and signs, treat injured animals, and act as a local do-gooder. It all feels positive.

The touchscreen controls (in portrait mode) are awkward: the top half of the screen controls the view, the bottom half — direction, but you can’t do them simultaneously. It’s much more convenient to use a gamepad, which is much simpler (despite the sad lack of the ability to invert the Y-axis) and also converts the game to landscape orientation.

At the same time, you can use a gamepad to control the view.

Apple Arcade: Discolored

This lovingly crafted puzzle game is reminiscent of early Resident Evil, and it’s not just the colorful puzzles, but the atmosphere. There are no zombies here, but the dark windows and flickering televisions are somehow frightening.

At the same time, there’s no zombies.

The setting — an eerie, empty ’50s diner has been stripped of color, and solving the puzzles gradually restores it. This, in turn, leads to certain objects that can help or hinder further progression. There are a few interesting puzzles as well.

Some of the puzzles are also interesting.

As with all first-person games, a gamepad is recommended. The only drawback is a strange slowness when turning — I figured it was done on purpose to increase the paranoia factor (Isn’t someone following me?), until I discovered there was no such problem on the touchscreen.
