Yahoo wants to buy Chrome – and is making its own browser

Internet market veteran Yahoo is once again looking to make its mark on the digital landscape. The company says it’s ready to buy the Chrome browser – if a court orders Google to sell it. In parallel, Yahoo has been developing its own browser for months. The moves are part of an ambitious strategy to get back into the internet search business.

It emerged during the antitrust trial against Google that Yahoo is actively exploring the possibility of launching its own browser and is interested in buying Chrome if it goes up for sale. The company believes the browser is the key to controlling the search market.

The court case against Google opens up new possibilities

The information came on the fourth day of hearings in the U.S. Justice Department’s lawsuit against Google. Among the proposed actions are the separation of the company’s assets and the possible sale of Chrome. Regulators say the browser serves as a critical channel for promoting Google Search, and its ownership would upset the competitive balance.

It’s not just the browser that’s being used to promote Google Search, it’s also the browser that’s being used to promote Google Search.

DuckDuckGo has already said it can’t afford such a purchase, but representatives from OpenAI and Perplexity have expressed interest. Yahoo has not been left out either and has indicated its intention to participate in a possible deal.

Browser as a tool of influence

According to Yahoo Search chief Brian Provost, about 60% of all search queries are made through the browser, with many coming directly from the address bar. That makes the browser a strategic asset for any company that wants to compete in search.

Since the summer of 2024, Yahoo has been actively working on its own browser – still in the prototype stage. Provost estimates it will take six to nine months to develop a basic version. At the same time, Yahoo is in talks with other companies to buy ready-made solutions, but Yahoo doesn’t disclose which ones.
