BAIC recalls almost 19 thousand Russian-built cars for installation of ERA-GLONASS system

Chinese brand BAIC has announced the start of a major service campaign that will send all of the brand’s cars produced at Kaliningrad-based Avtotor in 2023 and 2024 for installation of an emergency warning system. A total of 18,559 cars are invited to the service.
The manufacturer has notified vehicle owners to visit official service stations to install the equipment. All locally assembled models – the U5 Plus sedan, X35, X55, X7, X75 crossovers and BJ40 SUV – are covered by the campaign. All were produced between January 31, 2023 and July 14, 2024.

You can check whether a particular vehicle participates in this program by its identification number (VIN) on the website of Rosstandart. It is this agency that monitors the retrofitting process and ensures compliance with the regulations.
An earlier similar campaign affected another Chinese brand – Kaiyi, also associated with production at Avtotor. At that time, 19,752 vehicles were recalled for installation of an emergency communication system: 1,405 Kaiyi X7 crossovers, 4,799 X3 cars and 13,548 E5 sedans.
ERA-GLONASS is a mandatory system for all cars delivered to the Russian market. However, in 2021, amid a global shortage of components needed for its production, the authorities made a temporary decision to allow cars to be produced without the emergency communication module. With the obligation that later all vehicles will be equipped with it within the framework of special programs.

The equipment is installed entirely at the manufacturer’s expense. Owners do not have to pay for the work or purchase components – all costs are borne by BAIC. This is standard practice for all recall events, regardless of the reason for the recall.
