Google removed Gemini 1.5 models from the app after the launch of Flash 2.0

Almost three weeks after releasing a stable version of Gemini 2.0 Flash, Google has finally removed the Models 1.5 Flash and 1.5 Pro from the web version as well as apps on Android and iOS.

Gemini 1.5 Pro became available in May 2024, and 1.5 Flash in July. Until recently, they were available in the model selection menu with these descriptions:

Gemini 1.5 Pro.

• 1.5 Pro – for demanding tasks
• 1.5 Flash – for everyday help

Now Google is instead offering 2.0 Flash, which is also positioned as “For Everyday Tasks”. This model is now used by both free and paid users.

Subscribers to Gemini Advanced get additional features including 1 million token contextual window (analogous to 1,500 pages), file uploading, custom Gems, Recall, Saved Info and Deep Research, which continues to run on 1.5 Pro.

Google has removed 1.5 Pro, but 2.0 Pro is still in tests

Interestingly, Google has removed 1.5 Pro even before the official release of 2.0 Pro from pre-test mode. At this point, experimental version 2.0 Pro does not support real-time access and file uploads.

Nevertheless, 2.0 Flash officially outperforms 1.5 Pro in coding, factual accuracy, math, logic and other tests twice as fast.

Now Gemini Advanced users see the following options:

• 2.0 Flash – for everyday tasks + additional features
• 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental – for multitasking thinking
• 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental with apps – analyze information from YouTube, Maps and Search
• 2.0 Pro Experimental – for complex tasks
• 1.5 Pro with Deep Research – for in-depth analysis

Google is still testing 2.0 Pro, but is already betting on 2.0 Flash as the primary model for most users.
