CES 2025: L’Oréal unveils gadget that tailors skin care to the user

If you’ve ever been lost in a variety of beauty products and didn’t know which one was right for you, L’Oréal has a solution. At CES 2025, the company unveiled Cell BioPrint, a gadget that uses biochemical analysis to help you customize your skincare routine for younger, healthier-looking skin.

How Cell BioPrint works

L’Oréal developed the device in collaboration with NanoEntek, a Korean company known for its microfluidic “lab-on-a-chip” technology.

The process of use involves several steps:

    .

  1. Apply the special strip to the skin (e.g. chin line).
  2. Transfer the strip into the buffer solution.
  3. Load this solution into a special cartridge, which is then inserted into the analyzer device.

While the data is being processed, the device takes a picture of your face and prompts you to fill out a short survey about your skin condition and aging concerns. The whole process takes just five minutes, the company claims.

And it’s easy to use.

What BioPrint can do

Utilizing an approach that L’Oréal calls proteomics, the device provides:

  • Personalized recommendations for ingredients, such as retinol, that may be beneficial for your skin.
  • Predicting cosmetic problems (such as dark spots or enlarged pores) before they occur.

It is important to note that even the application of sunscreen does not affect the results of the analysis.

Science or marketing?

Despite the impressive claims, L’Oréal has yet to provide data from peer-reviewed scientific studies to back up the device’s effectiveness. Nevertheless, its launch coincides with a surge in interest in skincare, helped by the pandemic, social media and the popularity of stores like Sephora.

When will BioPrint become available?”

.

The device is not intended for home use at this time. The first phase of testing will begin in Asian stores in 2025. Later, the gadget could appear on the flagship counters of luxury brands in L’Oréal‘s portfolio, and then possibly move into the more mainstream segment.

Closure

Cell BioPrint promises to break new ground in personalized skin care by combining technology and cosmetology. If the gadget truly lives up to its claimed capabilities, it could revolutionize the skincare market by making it more scientific and personalized.
