Passkeys support: Walmart, Amazon, Playstation and others
The list of companies using passkeys has doubled in a year. It now includes such giants as Walmart, Amazon, Target, Playstation, Discord and Canva. This demonstrates the versatility of the technology, which has applications in a wide range of sectors.
Passkeys, introduced two years ago, replace traditional passwords with biometrics or security keys. The technology was developed FIDO Alliance with participation from Apple, Google and Microsoft. Among the active members of the alliance is 1Password, which actively promotes the use of passkeys.
Popularity of passkeys among 1Password users
According to 1Password:
- Already 4.2 million passkeys are stored in users’ accounts.
- Monthly 2.1 million authentications via passkeys are recorded.
- Every third user of the service has at least one saved passkey.
- 73% of users with passkeys are consumer accounts.
These statistics not only confirm the demand for the technology, but also underscore the level of trust users have in 1Password as a secure authentication platform.
Tools and innovations for developers
This year, 1Password introduced the “Passkey Ready” tool, which helps developers check if users are ready for passkeys. In addition, FIDO Alliance recently released new specifications that simplify key import and export between password managers.
On Apple devices, passkeys support has been available since iOS 16 via the Safari browser, and with the release of iOS 17, the technology is now available in third-party apps.
Perspectives on a password-free future
The increasing use of passkeys among companies and users confirms the effectiveness and reliability of this technology. Thanks to initiatives like those of 1Password and the FIDO Alliance, the world is moving towards a more secure and simpler authentication where passwords will become a thing of the past.
