Assassin’s Creed Shadows: release date, trailers, gameplay and more

All fans of the series have been waiting for this almost since the very first installment, and now, finally, we’ll get an Assassin’s Creed game set in feudal Japan in the fall of 2024. Previously known by the codename Assassin’s Creed Red, Shadows will be the final installment of the long-running Assassin saga. Ubisoft told us that a world premiere trailer would be shown first, but it turns out there’s a lot more information than just a first look at the game.

Trailers

The premiere trailer introduces us to the world and main characters of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The village of Naoe is attacked and burned by samurai and follows the path of shinobi. The foreigner Yasuke is introduced as a samurai undergoing training, and it is later revealed that he participated in the attack. The circumstances are unclear, but the two end up together against a big threat. What or who that will be, and whether it will tie into the larger Assassin’s Creed narrative, remains in the shadows for now.

Gameplay

.

It starts with an exploration segment that shows how you can naturally encounter NPCs with side quests while wandering around towns.

Assassin’s Creed previously had two protagonists in Syndicate, but in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Naoe and Yasuke will play with their own unique styles. In Ubisoft Forward’s extended gameplay walkthrough, we were presented with a ton of raw gameplay to show us what the game will be like when we pick it up.

An extended gameplay walkthrough shows us what the game will be like when we pick it up.

Naohe will be a more traditional stealthy stealthy assassin character due to her shinobi training. She will be able to hide in the shadows and use distractions and ninja tools such as kunai, shuriken, smoke bombs, and grappling hook to move stealthily. She will also utilize the iconic hidden blade to carry out assassinations. In gameplay, we see that she has the ability to use «Eagle Vision» to see enemies even through walls if they’re close enough.

Naohe will have a detection meter during stealth, which gradually fills up if you’re not behind cover or crawling through bushes near an enemy. Light also plays an important role, and extinguishing light sources can not only help you stay undetected, but also distract enemies.

As another method of killing, Naoe can use her chain sickle to pull up to unaware enemies at a distance and straighten them out. She also has a non-lethal grapple, which she can use to pull an enemy into an isolated area and then kill or knock them out.

.

Yasuke, on the other hand, is a samurai who prefers to deal with enemies in a more direct manner. His playstyle will rely on aggression, combos, blocks and parries to overpower his foes. He will have access to katanas, kanbos, bows and other melee weapons combined with heavier armor. In combat, we see him dodge an attack that appears to be unblockable, marked with a red flash, and then strike hard. Blue attacks can be blocked or parried, and reflecting the entire combo leaves the attacker vulnerable. Brutal finishing moves are back, and just as devastating.

Enemies will also have a yellow bar above their health, denoting armor that can be penetrated with enough hits.

You can choose which character you want to use in each mission, depending on the situation or your preference. Each will have their own skills that can be unlocked and used, as well as stats and gear unique to them.

A spy network and information gathering system is also mentioned. It will probably be similar to the Brotherhood’s system for recruiting new assassins for various missions, but no details are available yet. What is known is that you’ll be able to recruit new allies with their own skills to help you in your quest.

And most importantly — you’ll be able to pet a dog!”
