Tesla is now forcing Model S and X owners to purchase FSDs

Model S and Model X have been posting weak sales for several years despite updates, and the company’s latest move could further dampen demand. In the U.S., both models are up $10,000, which Tesla describes as a “value-enhanced package.”

For the extra cost, buyers get the built-in Full Self-Driving (FSD) package, which normally costs $8,000, as well as lifetime free access to Supercharging (as long as the car stays with the first owner). The package includes Premium Connectivity and the new Premium Service for 4 years.

FSD has long been known to Tesla fans. Free charging on the Supercharger was previously standard on the Model S and X, but it was later canceled as “unsustainable.” Now Tesla has brought it back, but with a condition: the free charging doesn’t pass to the next owner.

Premium Connectivity provides faster internet and access to features like real-time traffic mapping, satellite-view maps, and streaming video. This subscription typically costs $10 per month or $100 per year.

Premium Service is a new package that includes a maintenance plan and windshield protection. For 4 years, owners will receive free services like a camber, tire rotation, front camera cleaning, and replacement of the HEPA filters in the cabin.

Tesla seems eager to drive sales of its software solutions, which customers rarely buy separately. However, the price hike could further hit sales of premium models, which are already declining.
