In a July 8 support update, Sony acknowledged problems with devices suddenly rebooting, freezing and refusing to turn on. The failures were initially reported for four Japanese models: the SO-51F, SOG15, A501SO and XQ-FS44, but similar complaints have been reported from Europe, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Many of Sony’s regional stores have already taken the Xperia 1 VII off sale, including sites in the UK, Germany and Spain.
The cause of the problem has not yet been determined
Preliminary theory is that the problem may affect individual production batches and may be related to a hardware defect. However, the exact cause has not yet been determined. Sony has not said how many units are affected or when sales will resume.
For users experiencing the malfunction, the manufacturer offers a temporary solution: a forced reboot by pressing and holding the power and volume up buttons simultaneously for 20 seconds. It is also recommended to immediately update the software to the latest version and back up your data.
The company asks all owners of affected devices to contact support. In some cases, failures can be resolved programmatically, but some smartphones may require repair.
Risk for premium segment
TheXperia 1 VII, unveiled just a month ago, features a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip and a triple camera aimed at advanced users. But widespread technical issues could undermine the device’s credibility and make it difficult to push the model into the premium segment if Sony doesn’t fix them quickly and transparently.
