Realme will show off new phone charging technology on Aug. 14

A new battery charging technology that looks set to make a big difference to the time it takes to charge a phone will be unveiled later this week, but the new product won’t be coming to Google’s Pixel 9 series. Instead, it will come from Realme, which will unveil its Realme 320W SuperSonic charging system on August 14. Forget what you think about fast battery charging, because this system will take it to a whole new level.

Forget what you think about fast battery charging, because this system will take it to a whole new level.

The company has shared early details about its 320W SuperSonic charging system on several social media platforms. On China’s Weibo, the company posted a short video claiming that the device will be the world’s best in terms of charging speed. Those are bold claims, but what is known about the new technology right now?”

What is known about the new technology already?

From official sources —nothing. Recently, a video leaked showing a Realme smartphone being charged using a 320W SuperSonic charger. It charges to 17% charge in just 35 seconds. While the SuperSonic charger almost certainly won’t be able to maintain that pace for an entire charging cycle, it’s likely to beat the 300-watt HyperCharge charging system from rival Redmi, which has been shown to be able to fully charge a 4,400 mAh battery in about five minutes.

The SuperSonic charger is the only one that can fully charge a 4,400 mAh battery in about five minutes.

The Realme 320W SuperSonic charger follows a 240-watt charging system introduced by the brand in 2023. It could charge a 4,600mAh battery in just under 10 minutes thanks to a combination of GaN charging technology, special USB cables, and various chips controlling everything — from safety to cooling.

The Realme 320W SuperSonic Charging System is the first of its kind in the world.

When will the 320W SuperSonic charging system show up in phones? This is where things get tricky. The charging technology will be unveiled, and likely fully demonstrated, on August 14 at a Realme event in China. However, this isn’t a phone launch event, but a fan event, so it’s likely to be more of a demonstration of upcoming new products.

SuperSonic charging technology will be introduced and likely fully demonstrated at the event.

Realme’s 240-watt charging won’t be available on all models, either, and the Redmi’s HyperCharge isn’t beyond a demo just yet. At this point, it’s probably not so much about when we’ll be able to use the feature ourselves, but rather what the engineers are doing to significantly reduce battery charging time.
