Nvidia and Hewlett Packard Enterprise announce plans to build a supercomputer

Nvidia (NVDA.O) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE.N) announced Tuesday a strategic partnership with the Leibniz Supercomputing Center to build a new advanced supercomputer using Nvidia’s next-generation chips. The project, dubbed Blue Lion, is scheduled to launch in early 2027 and will feature Nvidia’s «Vera Rubin» chips, allowing scientists to conduct large-scale computational research.

European Research Expansion

The announcement of the partnership was made at a supercomputing conference in Hamburg, Germany. On the same day, Nvidia announced that Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the US also plans to implement systems based on the chips next year. In addition, the company announced that the Jupiter supercomputer used at Germany’s Forschungszentrum Julich became the fastest system in Europe by using its chips.

The agreements underscore efforts by European institutions to compete with U.S. leaders in supercomputers used in areas such as biotechnology and climate research. Long before Nvidia became a leader in artificial intelligence, the company was actively promoting the use of its chips to accelerate complex scientific calculations, such as climate change modeling, that require enormous computational resources and time.

Model «Climate in a Bottle»

Nvidia is currently working on integrating artificial intelligence to solve scientific problems. The company unveiled a new AI model called «Climate in a Bottle» that allows scientists to input initial conditions – such as sea surface temperature – and get predictions 10 to 30 years in advance. This approach combines classical physics with AI capabilities to simulate turbulent atmospheric flows and analyze multiple scenarios at high granularity.

Nvidia’s head of data center product marketing Dion Harris said, «This method will allow researchers to analyze thousands of scenarios with greater accuracy and speed than ever before».
