Microsoft will end support for the Copilot chatbot in WhatsApp after Jan. 15
Microsoft has announced that the artificial intelligence-based chatbot Copilot in WhatsApp will no longer be available after January 15. After that date, users will no longer be able to chat with the AI via WhatsApp unless they switch to Microsoft’s Copilot mobile apps or use the chatbot via a web browser.
The company explained that the removal of Copilot from the popular messenger is due to WhatsApp’s revised platform rules, which were announced last month. At the time, Meta*, the owner of WhatsApp, said it would no longer support universal AI-based chatbots through the WhatsApp Business API for customer service. Instead, Meta* has decided to reserve those resources for other types of businesses.
The company said that it will not support AI-based universal chatbots through WhatsApp Business APIs for customer service.
This change doesn’t prohibit companies from using AI to serve their customers, but it crosses out the use of WhatsApp as a channel for distributing AI-based chatbots, which will affect companies such as Microsoft, OpenAI, Perplexity and others.
OpenAI has already announced its plans to end its integration with WhatsApp in January.
It’s important for Copilot users in WhatsApp to know that their chat histories are not saved when they migrate to Microsoft’s platform because access to the chatbot in WhatsApp has not been authenticated. Microsoft recommends that users who need to save their conversations export them using WhatsApp’s built-in tools by January 15.
* Owned by Meta, it is recognized as an extremist organization in Russia and its activities are banned.
