An update to the DirectX Raytracing (DXR) 1.2 graphics API was announced at GDC 2025. Company representatives promise that the new version will provide a significant performance increase and improved raytracing quality. To achieve this goal will be used Opacity Micromaps OMM (Opacity Micromaps OMM), which will accelerate the rendering of translucent objects and reduce the load on the GPU, as well as reorganization of shader execution, simplifying the processing of complex effects such as shadows and reflections. In addition, the corporation plans to improve the PIX program’s interface.

According to Microsoft, DXR 1.2 is being worked on by leading hardware vendors (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Qualcomm) and various game studios, including Remedy Entertainment. A test version of the technology will be available to all developers and studios by the end of April 2025.
