Hyundai will launch an EREV in 2027 with a range of 960 km

At the annual CEO Investor Day event in New York, Hyundai Motor Group announced plans to bring its first extended range electric vehicle (EREV) to market in 2027. This type of car is already gaining popularity in China and is gradually making its way into the North American market.
What is an EREV
EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) — is an electric vehicle augmented with a small gasoline engine that does not drive the wheels, but operates solely as a generator to recharge the battery. The driver gets all the benefits of an EV — instant response, silence, the ability to charge from the mains, — while completely eliminating the problem of «fear of running out of power».
Features of future Hyundai models
Hyundai says its EREV will be capable of traveling more than 600 miles (960 kilometers) on a single charge and with the generator running. To achieve this, the company has developed an optimized system for integrating the battery and the internal combustion engine.
In contrast to classic EREVs, the Korean company uses its own high-performance batteries, which allows:
- gain the power of a full electric car,
- reduce battery capacity by almost half (compared to current EV models),
- maintain high availability and performance.
If we focus on the Ioniq 5, we could be talking about a 30-40 kWh battery coupled with a compact gasoline motor.

Genesis and hybrid lineup expansion
Hyundai has confirmed that EREV technology will also appear in its premium Genesis brand, which will start producing its own hybrids from 2026. Overall, the group plans to increase the number of hybrid models to more than 18 by 2030.
This decision is explained by the market situation: more and more buyers are interested in electric cars, but are not ready to completely abandon internal combustion engines. Hybrids and EREVs are becoming the «transitional link» between traditional cars and all-electric cars.
Why it matters for big autos
One of the biggest challenges for large electric pickups and SUVs remains the combination of high driving range, towing capabilities, and capacious batteries. Large batteries weigh the vehicle heavily and make it less efficient. EREVs are becoming a compromise solution, which is especially in demand in China and is increasingly being promoted in the U.S.
- Scout with its Terra and Traveler models, which have a 500-mile range,
- Ram with the new Ram 1500 REV, replacing the purely electric pickup truck.
