HUAWEI unveiled HarmonyOS NEXT without Android code
By ForGeeks HUAWEI held a press conference to unveil the new HarmonyOS NEXT mobile operating system, which has its own unique foundation and does not support Android apps. Beta versions are available now and will soon be available for the first smartphones.
HarmonyOS NEXT is positioned by the company as a spatial immersive operating system with vibrant colors. It is based on Hongmeng’s proprietary kernel and includes components such as the Pangu AI model, DevEco Studio development environment, ArkUI and ArkUI-X programming environments, Ark compiler, ArkTS and Cangjie programming languages, and EROFS and HMDFS file systems.
HarmonyOS NEXT is based on the company’s proprietary Hongmeng kernel.
The main feature of HarmonyOS NEXT is that it is completely independent of Android and lacks elements of AOSP distributions. This means it doesn’t support APK files. Some Chinese developers have already started porting their apps to the new platform, but there are only about 200 of them so far.

HUAWEI recently beta tested the new firmware on the HUAWEI Mate 60, Mate 60 Pro and Mate X5 smartphone models. The video below shows a partial design of the operating system interface.

HarmonyOS NEXT will only be available in China, however, while international versions of HUAWEI smartphones will remain compatible with Android apps.
