Huawei Kirin X90: details of the first desktop chip for HarmonyOS revealed

Huawei has officially unveiled HarmonyOS for PCs and confirmed that the first device running the new operating system will debut as early as May 20. As expected, the chip inside it will be of its own manufacture – and judging by a fresh leak from China, Huawei is preparing something ambitious.

Kirin X90 processor and “Charlotte Pro”

According to a DCS insider, Huawei’s desktop processor will be called Kirin X90 and its internal codename is “Charlotte Pro”. Interestingly, the Kirin 9010 chip found in the Mate 70 smartphone bears a similar “Charlotte” name, hinting at a shared architectural origin.

The Kirin 9010 chip will be called the “Charlotte”, which hints at a common architectural origin.

The Kirin X90 is presumably being developed based on the mobile architecture, but with serious improvements to achieve the level of performance needed for PCs.

10 cores, 20 threads and support for national encryption standards

The chip is described as 10-core in a 4+4+2 configuration with support for 20 threads thanks to multi-threading technology (SMT). It will also be compatible with Chinese cryptographic standards SM3 and SM4.

Although the exact graphics, process and heatpack specifications have not yet been disclosed, early leaks indicate that the GPU may have 10 cores and the codename “Ma Liang 920.”

Support for fast memory and modern peripherals

The Kirin X90 is expected to be able to handle up to 32GB of LPDDR5-6400 RAM on a 128-bit bus and provide up to 100GB/s of bandwidth. For storage, there’s support for up to 2TB of SSD storage and three USB-4 ports.

The first step toward full vertical integration

This is not Huawei’s first entry into the PC market, but it is the first time the company is offering its own processor and operating system at the same time. The move demonstrates a commitment to full vertical integration from hardware to software. Only the first post-release tests will tell how competitive the Kirin X90 will be.
