Apple is testing real-time translation on AirPods

An iOS 26 beta has revealed images indicating the arrival of Live Translation for real-time translation of conversations on AirPods. The image shows the earbuds with a “Hello” greeting in multiple languages and a hint that the translation activation will be double-tapped. The file with the illustration is named “Translate”, which clearly hints at the corresponding mode.
The leak was first reported by 9to5Mac, but confirmation was found in the Translate app resources in the latest iOS 26 beta.
How Live Translation will work in AirPods
Even before the release of iOS 26, Bloomberg columnist Mark Gurman reported that Apple is planning to add a live dialog translation feature to AirPods. Judging by the beta data, the company is already testing the innovation, and its launch is possible either along with the iOS 26 release or in a future update.
Live Translation in iOS 26 is now available in the Phone, Messages, and FaceTime apps, so extending the functionality to AirPods seems like a logical follow-up.

Supported Models and Requirements
According to images found in the beta, Live Translation will work on AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4. Since the current translation features rely on Apple Intelligence, it’s likely that you’ll need an iPhone that supports it to use the new mode.
An iPhone with support for that technology will be required to use the new mode.
