Vivo unveiled a new smartphone Y200+: an upgrade or a step back?

Vivo recently announced a new smartphone, the Y200+, which is part of the confusing Yxxx series. This lineup already has several models, and the Y200+ is the eighth device in its family. Despite the fact that this is a theoretical update to the Y100+, in fact the novelty is almost identical to its predecessor, and in some aspects even inferior to it. This raises questions about the feasibility of releasing a new device.

The main features of the Y200+

The smartphone features a smaller 6.68-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 720×1608 pixels and support for 120Hz refresh rate. Also, like the Y100+, there’s a 6,000mAh battery with 44W wired charging support. The cameras of the device remain unchanged: 50 MP main and 2 MP secondary cameras on the back, and a 5 MP front camera, which is a downgrade from its predecessor’s 8 MP.

The Y200+ also features IP64 dust and splash resistance, the same 7.99mm thickness and 199g weight as its predecessor.

Design Features and Innovations

One of the few changes that can be highlighted is the new back panel design. This may justify the release of the device, although for many, this step will seem inconsequential. However, the manufacturer claims that sounds from the speakers are 300% louder, which is also a noticeable improvement.

The Y200+ has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, and runs on Origin OS 4.

Price and availability

The smartphone is currently only available in China with prices starting at CNY 1,099 (~$150 or €145), making it an affordable option in its segment. However, given the questionable need for a model upgrade, whether this device is worth waiting for in international markets is yet to be seen.
