Yahoo integrates generative AI into its search engine

Yahoo has announced the launch of a new AI-powered search tool called Yahoo Scout. Currently in beta, the service runs on Claude, an AI model developed by Anthropic.

According to Yahoo, Scout “synthesizes” information from publicly available web sources while also leveraging the company’s own data and content to generate answers to natural language search queries. The interface will feature interactive multimedia elements, structured lists and tables, as well as visible source links to make fact-checking easier for users.

Alongside Scout’s launch, Yahoo also announced plans to create a unified “intelligent platform” that will be embedded across various Yahoo products. This includes AI-generated summaries in Yahoo Mail, a “key insights” section in Yahoo News, and analytics for matches and events on Yahoo Sports. Scout will also be integrated into Yahoo Shopping to provide product recommendations and purchase links, and into Yahoo Finance to display company financial metrics, analytical ratings, and real-time explanations of stock price changes. Over time, Yahoo says Scout’s response system will become more personalized and geared towards deeper user engagement.

For comparison, Google began showcasing generative AI capabilities in its search engine back in 2023, with its AI Mode becoming widely available across the US last year. The company has also been actively integrating its AI models into its product ecosystem, including Gmail and online shopping services.
