The firmware of Nothing devices was originally characterized by minimalistic design and lack of unnecessary elements. However, owners of the brand’s more affordable models should get ready for a change. The company has found a way to monetize budget gadgets, which may affect user experience.

In particular, the Nothing Phone (3a), and possibly other models, will introduce the Lock Glimpse feature. It will automatically change the wallpaper on the lock screen, including ad images. The devices will also come with pre-installed apps from partners.

The innovation is announced for the (3a) lineup for now, but the company plans to extend the monetization practice to all but the flagship models. Nothing’s representatives revealed the details of how Lock Glimpse works:

  • Users will be able to customize the categories of ad wallpapers shown and choose the refresh mode;
  • in the future, it will be possible to use your own images as wallpaper, but probably with an overlay of advertising text;
  • the company guarantees that personal data will not be shared with outside organizations;
  • the number of pre-installed partner applications will be limited, and their removal will not be difficult

Nothing emphasizes that control over the advertising features remains with the user, who will be able to disable them at will. More details will be revealed on October 29 at the Phone (3a) Lite launch event.
