Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 will be thinner and lighter

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Flip8 alongside the Galaxy Z Fold8 next summer, and fresh information from South Korea reveals interesting details about the new foldable smartphone.

Sources say the Flip8 will be at least 10 percent thinner and lighter than its predecessor. The device will be a maximum of 6mm thick when unfolded, 12mm thick when folded — and weigh — around 170g.These changes should help Samsung increase sales of the Flip8 and Fold8 by 10% over the Flip7 and Fold7 models. The company’s goal is — to sell about 6.7 million units of the new foldable smartphones.

The decision to make the Flip8 more compact stems from the fact that Flip7 sales have been relatively weak. It also makes sense, given that Samsung’s Chinese rivals have recently been aggressively targeting thin and light foldable devices.

Samsung is also rumored to be concerned about Apple’s possible entry into the foldable smartphone market in 2026. While that could «expand the market» overall, Apple is also able to attract some of Samsung’s customers. One way to retain users is to improve the appeal of the Flip8 by making it compact and lightweight.

Samsung said the Flip8’s compactness and lightness could improve its appeal.

It’s worth noting that the 2025 Fold7 has already received a significant reduction in thickness and weight compared to the Fold6, while the Flip7 has remained close in size to the Flip6. If the information is confirmed, Flip8 will get similar improvements next year.
