The updated design of the Galaxy S25 Ultra could create problems for owners in the future

Some things shouldn’t be changed without a good reason – especially if they’re already working perfectly. Take the camera on Samsung’s flagship Ultra models.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra isn’t too different from its predecessor, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the Galaxy S24 Ultra was already a near-perfect device. The new model offers a few key improvements: a slightly larger 6.9-inch screen, a more powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, an updated 50MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a redesigned design.

It’s this new design, however, that could lead to problems in the future, as revealed in a disassembly of the device conducted by popular YouTube channel JerryRigEverything.

The new-look camera is a risky move

The Galaxy S25 Ultra gets softer corners instead of the sharp edges of its predecessor, and flat sides instead of rounded ones. But aside from these changes, Samsung has added another distinction – the massive rings around the cameras borrowed from the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra has been designed with the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

At first glance, this might seem like just a design element, but disassembly revealed that it’s not. Unlike the metal camera bezels of the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the new smartphone’s rings are black, and the lenses are now slightly raised and not directly attached to the body.

At first glance, this might seem like a simple design element, but disassembly revealed that it’s not directly attached to the body.

What problems could this cause?

  1. Dust and dirt accumulation
Because of the small gap between the lens and the housing, dust can accumulate in this area over time.
  2. Poor fixation of camera modules
Cameras are no longer attached directly to the back panel, making them potentially vulnerable. Although Zach Nelson (host of JerryRigEverything) says the rings look sturdy enough, they are merely glued on rather than securely fixed.

Checking it out, it turns out that even a regular office knife can effortlessly pry up and remove these rings. And if the camera is subjected to a more severe impact, such as being dropped or caught on something, the glass panel of the case is likely to be damaged. This raises questions about the durability of the device, given its impressive $1300 price tag.

The screen is softer – plus or minus?

.

Another interesting discovery made during disassembly concerns the screen. It turns out that the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s display is easier to scratch compared to its predecessor. However, this is likely due to the fact that Samsung has changed the structure of the glass, making it softer to make it more resistant to impact. As a result, the screen is better able to withstand drops, but becomes less scratch-resistant.

Case durability remains at an all-time high

Despite the nuances described above, the Galaxy S25 Ultra retains its outstanding structural strength. Like previous generations, it easily passes the bend test without warping or cracking.

The Galaxy S25 lineup is scheduled to launch on February 7.
