The new foldable iPhone will get a hidden camera for Face ID

According to the latest rumors, Apple is preparing a revolutionary iPhone with a flexible screen and built-in facial recognition – a first in the company’s history. Amid growing interest in foldable smartphones, Apple appears to be taking a step towards the trend. A new leak from verified whistleblower Digital Chat Station, published by 9to5Mac, indicates that the future foldable iPhone will get a Face ID camera hidden under the display. This would be the first such solution among Apple devices.
What’s known about the new device
- a 7.76-inch diagonal display with a resolution of 2713×1920 pixels
- external display at 5.49 inches with a resolution of 2088×1422 pixels
These specs confirm early speculation that Apple is developing a smartphone with a “paperback” form factor similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, rather than a clamshell like the Motorola Razr, as earlier rumors had suggested.
The device’s release date hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but it’s expected to announce in 2026 or 2027, and the estimated price will be between $2,000 and $2,500.
Why Apple is so slow on foldable smartphones
Apple remains the only major manufacturer that has yet not introduced a single foldable device. Sources inside the industry say that technical difficulties with the folding mechanism and display durability are slowing down the development process.
In addition, the company is working in parallel on a foldable iPad, which is rumored to fold out to the size of two iPad Pro. It’s not expected to be released until 2028 at the earliest.
What to expect from a foldable iPhone
According to analysts, a foldable iPhone shouldn’t just be a regular iPhone with a flexible screen. As CNET columnist Andrew Lanxon notes, Apple needs to not just offer new hardware, but also adapt the software part to unlock the form factor’s full potential. He also urges the company to release number of models -including more affordable variants, not just premium flagships.
