Nothing Phone (3) will lose Glyph backlighting

Nothing has officially announced its first full flagship, the Phone (3), which is expected to be released as early as July. Ahead of the launch, the brand has started sharing the first details about the new product, and one of them turned out to be unexpectedly disappointing: the device will lose the iconic Glyph LED backlighting on the back.

Glyph backlighting and translucent design have been a trademark of Nothing smartphones since the very first generation. These elements immediately made the devices visually distinguishable from similarly styled competitors. However, in a recent statement, the company confirmed that the Phone (3) won’t have LEDs – at least not in their usual form.

While the decision seems odd at first glance, fans are already speculating that it may not be about abandoning the light display altogether, but rather a change in technology. One X user (ex-Twitter) suggested that Nothing could switch to a dot matrix system, which would be more flexible and energy efficient. Such a move would seem like a logical evolution of the Glyph idea.

The question is to what extent users actually used backlighting in their daily lives. Despite the visual impact, for many, Glyph remained more of a marketing feature than a functional element. Perhaps the company decided it was time to focus on the more traditional aspects of a flagship – performance, cameras, and ecosystem.
