SpaceX’s Starlink satellites have changed the way we think about satellite Internet connectivity. The Starlink constellation of nearly 7,000 satellites provides high-speed internet to more than 4.6 million users in 118 countries. SpaceX is launching batches of satellites every week and is now testing Starlink Direct-to-Cell (DTC) satellites that will provide mobile connectivity from virtually anywhere on Earth.

The first Starlink satellites were launched on November 11, 2019 on a Falcon 9 rocket. They are 550 kilometers high and transmit data 65 times faster than geostationary satellites. SpaceX is also offering compact Starlink models for mobile use and enhanced rates for businesses.

August 29, 2022 announced plans for satellites that will connect directly to cell phones, allowing messages and calls to be transmitted anywhere with open skies. This could help people in emergency situations by allowing data to be transmitted for wayfinding. The DTC satellites would act like cell towers in space, transmitting data to Starlink’s ground network and telecom operators.

SpaceX has requested permission to test DTC starting Jan. 27, 2025, which will allow beta testing with regular cell phone users. The success of the tests will expand DTC’s cellular service and improve coverage in remote areas. The testing will continue until July 26, 2025, after which DTC may be implemented into the operating system.

Accordingly, DTC will be available for testing until July 26, 2025.
