Apple is testing new features for the iPhone 18

The iPhone 18 is almost a year away from release, and the first hardware tests are already picking up steam – and among them are some interesting innovations.

The most significant is the camera. Weibo insider Digital Chat Station reports that Apple is actively experimenting with a variable aperture main camera for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Instead of the usual f/1.78 aperture, the new smartphone will be able to take portraits with a narrow depth of field and then cover the aperture in bright light for more precise image detail.

Although this isn’t the first time such rumors have surfaced online, their repetition from various sources confirms the likelihood of the feature being implemented in future models. According to a previous report by South Korean publication ET News, such a variable aperture camera has a high chance of being included in the list of new products in 2026.

Also, according to the source, Apple is testing a front camera cutout variant for the iPhone 18 Pro. It’s also considering placing the camera under the display and implementing Face ID without a notch – with a small hole for selfies, similar to what most current Android smartphones use.

Although the horizontal camera arrangement on the back will remain, the design of the case is expected to change – insiders are talking about a “transparent” back panel, which would be a noticeable and dramatic change from the current iPhone style.

Apple has made a number of significant changes to the design and functionality of its iPhone Pro this year, and one wonders if the company will focus on new innovations in the future. In addition, the iPhone 19 series, timed to coincide with Apple’s 20th anniversary, is just around the corner. Perhaps these models will be the ones to introduce revolutionary innovations – such as a hole punch for the camera, a new UDC panel on the front or a transparent back. All the details will become known as the development progresses.
